Lost: Beyond the Looking Glass

by Adam Bergstein

LOST IN KATE’S SITE

When players first visited Kate’s site, they encountered another PhP script cycling randomly through images from Lost. The anagram found here had a two-fold meaning: “Cast do jam planck” was first a reference to the mathematician and philosopher Max Planck. It also unscrambled to Jack Scotland Map, a clue as to where he might be located, and what he might be searching for.

And then the page was changed, updated, to include the phrase “Seek a Doc Steps Then Free I run,” which explained that “Austen keeps a secret, find her,” and links on this page to pictures of a Phuket Marathon and the game site about Patong Beach which when you visit holds multiple clues about what is going on with Kate and where to find her. Included on the site is a link to a You Tube video with another code embedded within it:

Which unscrambled means:
THIS IS PENNY WIDMORE. MY FATHER IS INVOLVED WITH MITTLEWERK. ACHARA IS CONNECTED TO DHARMA AND HANSO FOUNDATION. SHE IS USING MIND CONTROL ON KATE. WE MUST FIND OUT HOW TO BREAK THEIR CONTROL. JACK IS SAFE WITH ME BUT HAS A HIGH FEVER. I WILL STAY IN TOUCH...

Many players were confused by the references to the Phuket Marathon, until they found this message encoded in a zip file. The translated file says the following:

BACK OK? MITTLEWERK RELEASING SPIDER PROTOCOL 06.17.07 ON PHUKET NOT ORIGINAL ISLAND TARGET ACHARA INVOLVED

The intension of Mittelwerk and the Hanso Foundation where clear: They were intending on releasing a virus during the marathon, potentially killing hundreds. The goal of the players became clear: to find Kate, and stop the Spider Protocol. How was Kate being controlled? Another page linked from her site explained that she was tied to Legion, in fact controlled by them. The Legion, it appeared, was a group of individuals able to mind control others and make them do their bidding. Perhaps the Hanso Foundation and Mittlewerk were part of Legion, but either way they were definitely connected to it. But where was Kate? Another anagram, “wiki temple north,” or “on Mittlewerk ship” explained her location, and that Legion had released her from their grip. Another code left in hexidecimal form decoded to explain that “This is Kate. Email me on 6.12.07. They are going to kill Jack wa…”

She didn’t seem to have time to finish her message, but those that did email her received work that Jack could not be trusted, that Legion had him. This was confirmed when Jack’s email account seemed to send horrible messages to players in Latin, even telling them to “go to hell.” The players continued to communicate with Legion, sending biblical messages, trying to keep him occupied. It worked.
